The authors study the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education (1954) in a local school corporation in Allen County, Indiana. The study focuses on the political struggles with consolidation and racial balance that enveloped the school corporation in the 1980s and early 1990, then places these struggles within the context of economic and demographic change in the county. The authors reflect on what it means today to be living in the shadow of the Brown decision, and how historical research can help construct new solutions for understanding and dealing with race and equity issues, as economic and demographic factors continue to reshape the reality that schools face.
