Abstract

The proposed fly ash concrete (FAC) overlay mixture included a total cementitious materials (CM) content of 394 kg/m3; 20 percent of which is Class C fly ash and 80% is cement. Fibrous additives were incorporated within the mix design proportions to improve the resistant to cracking. Experimental test results were conducted on the compressive and flexural strengths, bond strength, shrinkage, permeability, and residual strength. The test results of performance characteristics of the proposed FAC overlay mixture were compared with the performance characteristics of the most widely used overlay systems; latex-modified concrete (LMC) and microsilica concrete (MSC) overlays. The proposed FAC overlay mixture demonstrated high performance characteristics essential for fulfilling the intended functionality of the overlay with significant reduction in the cost compared with the LMC and MSC overlays.
