Abstract

The painted program of the Monastery of Saint John in Müstair, Switzerland operates on multiple levels for varied viewers, but the monastic worshipper would have had time for a more sustained engagement. With his knowledge, he would have easily made connections across images as well as between images and texts. This paper will analyze how a monk intimately familiar with the Benedictine Rule would have experienced the program, especially images of events that prefigure as well as respond to aspects of monastic practice.
