Redefining community for first-year music education majors.
Lilly Conference on College and University teaching
Traverse City, MI
Although a goal of most first-year seminars is developing a community of learners, music majors often bring to college pre-existing perceptions of community, narrowly defined by the kinships formed and nurtured in their high school music programs. This presentation offers a model of a first-year seminar for music education majors that broadens students’ perception of community to embrace the breadth of the university experience, civic engagement, and identification with the teaching profession.
