Abstract

Conscientious college teachers are always concerned about student participation. In a large class – typically anything over two dozen students – the challenge can be particularly daunting. No matter how interesting the topic or animated the instructor, students will differentially participate in the discussion. While instructors can proactively encourage reticent students, there is no way to guarantee relatively equal participation. One way around this difficulty is to use an electronic discussion board. This can take the form of either a threaded discussion or a blog.
