Panel members will discuss their experiences with two Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne programs established to enhance the retention of first year students. Consultants will describe the theory and practice they used to address conflicting expectations held by all participants—students, faculty, program directors, and administration—associated with the Summer Bridge and First Year Experience programs. We will consider methods we have used for empowering first year student writers unfamiliar with the academic discourse community. Attendees will have the opportunity to share similar experiences, concerns, and innovative solutions regarding their existing or developing programs for retention of first year students.
