Place of Publication
This paper evaluates how three United States history textbooks that are frequently used in high school history courses cover the events that occurred on the campus of Kent State University on May 4, 1970. It considers how the textbooks describe events leading to the incident, the incident itself, and situations that evolved from it. Having evaluated that coverage, the paper makes several recommendations about how the teaching of the Kent State incident can be improved so that students may develop a realistic perspective about this pivotal event in 20th century American history.
